Our Shooting Locales

Old Mission Lighthouse - © Moose Peterson

Why did we select these locales? That’s a very valid and important question because it’s what makes DLWS so unique. It’s what you should consider when picking the right locale for YOU!
DLWS is the only traveling digital workshop of its kind, taking a complete digital lab on the road to maximize shooting. This is so we can offer so many unique and special North American landscapes to inspire you, the participant! The locales we select are based on Moose’s own travels through North America, locations that offer the best teaching opportunities and offer the staff visual stimulation. Yes, locales are selected based on having the widest photographic inspirations and challenges providing the best learning opportunities. While we get up early enough to capture the sunrise, the sunrise itself is quite often not our subject for the morning. Each shoot of the three days of shooting are planned out to maximize what it is DLWS is trying to teach. Each shoot providing delight and material for the next lesson. Devilish by design, effective in practice.

Are you required to accompany the instructors at each shoot? Nope, not at all. But you’re spending a bunch of hard earned time and cash to be at DLWS, why not make the most of your expenditure and attach yourself to the hip of an instructor. Because at DLWS, you are encouraged to do just that! If you see something else you want to photograph, you are more then welcome to follow your heart. Some do and come back with killer images, but that’s not the goal of DLWS. That probably sounds kinda strange, a photographic workshop not out to capture killer images. Our goal is to provide you with a wide variety of photographic tools so when you’re out on your own shooting after DLWS, you’ll have all the tools to bring back your passion to share with others in the form of THE photograph. We think we can accomplish this best by shooting with you which is why we don’t send you out on your own. When you “tag along” with the instructors, you will learn a lot more then just where to set up your tripod. It’s at the shoots that so much of the teaching occurs, in real time and real life.

It seems really silly to us, the DLWS staff, for folks to pay so much money to join us, only to not join us when we’re shooting. We love folks who attach themselves to our hips and drive us nuts with questions. Really…these are our ideal students, those who ask question upon question like: “Can I look through your lens?” Why did you frame it that way?” “Will you look through my lens and make a suggestion?” “Why that lens?” “Why are you not using a polarizer?” We basically demand folks ask questions, that’s how we all learn more, and have one heck of a lot of fun.

Is the shooting schedule for the event determined prior to the event? Nope, that’s done days prior to the start of the event. The staff come to the locales early and spend it scouting old and new spots to take our cameras. We look for the best time for light, challenges we can teach from and excitement to get the creative juices flowing. When you check-in to DLWS, you will be handed a printed schedule. As the very last sentence indicates, the schedule will change bases on light. We won’t cancel for bad weather, but we do change shoot locales because of light. We do chase the light!

DLWS does not cancel events, we never have and never will. In fact, most events are filled 6-8 months prior to the event. You can count on us being there!

San Francisco, CA - Jan 10-13, 2010 FULL

© Moose PetersonThe staff are all excited to be going back to San Francisco, it's been a couple of years. It's a marvelous place to photographically explore Redwoods, history, beaches and of course, the Golden Gate. We're adding a special treat this time, a "landscape model" shoot. Joe will work his magic for a one of a kind shoot on the bay incorporating all that DLWS has to teach in one marvelous location with a model. It's going to be something! And to be real honest with you, this DLWS features some of the finest dinning. Come join us by the bay, it's a great town for photography.

Santa Fe, NM - March 07-10, 2010 FULL

© Moose PetersonDLWS is heading to what seems like Joe's 2nd home for a great week of fun and killer photography. We have the SouthWest as our subject with vast landscapes and old spanish style architecture. As a special treat, we'll be shooting at the old, historic and infamous prison one morning and one evening. And you just never know what other special surprises we have in store. We're been planning this one for some time so we are really excited for to smack some chilies and see that romantic sunset. We're staying at the very romantic, pictursque Bishop's Lodge where we've secured a killer rate for our participants. We can easily see this becoming one of our favorite locales!

Moab, UT- May 09-12, 2010 - FULL

© Moose PetersonDLWS is heading back to where it all begin in 2003. Moab, UT holds a special place in our hearts and our hard drives. Arches, Canyonland and now Cisco are jsut some of the locales we will travel with our cameras on this event. We're based out of the gorgeous Red Cliffs Lodge which is an event in itself. Located on the Colorado River, you'll be tempted to just shoot from your porch. Sharon has secured a very special rate with extends after the event (with the limited space and rooms, you will have to register and receive the code to get the rate) so you can sleep, work images and recup before going back to the real world. Like all our events, this one will be full very quickly so don't hesitate!

Mt Washington Vly, NH - Sept 26-29, 2010 - FULL

© Moose PetersonI am so excited to be heading to New Hampshire! This is a brand new location for DLWS and one that promises to be just incredible. We're staying right next to a white steeple church (not the one pictured here) in a gorgeous valley below Mt Washington. We're in a very historic Inn with a killer rate ($109) and tons of great photo opps. While fall color is the main attraction it's not our only photographic subject. Like every DLWS event, we have special surprises in store along with the regular slate of instruction we bring to each event. We really look forward to your joining us. We regret we have to raise our base prices for 2010-2011 season. The price is $995, NAPP discount is still honored.

Freeport, ME - Oct 10-13, 2010

© Moose PetersonSeriously, when I told Joe we'd be hosting this event in Freeport and we'd be photographing lighthouses, he said he couldn't wait! Yeah, this place is just that cool. The home of L.L.Bean will be the site of our ME 2010 event and I can't wait to be back. We were actually here three times in 2009 and we're not tired of it yet. ME coastal coves, lanes surrounded in fall color, ME's most picturesque lighthouses, amazing graveyards, beautiful, moody skies and really great folks is just some of the reasons we love it here so much and we're bringing DLWS to this amazing location. Hope you come, let a little butter run off your chin as you munch a fresh lobster and let the sweetest piece of New England coast get into you soul!

Bozeman, MT - Nov 07-10, 2010

© Moose PetersonI don't think the staff could be anymore excited about returning to Bozeman for a DLWS event. It produced literally some lifetime images for us, me especially that you just gotta go back and see if it was real or not. We're talking western theme folks with ghost towns and cattle round ups, vast landscapes and really good food. What really makes this event so special are the folks of Bozeman who welcome us so. The DLWS event has it all from vast landscapes, old buildings, models, light and the romance of the old west. Staying in a gorgeous facility, I have no doubt we'll strike gold again in this cattle town. So get along little doggie and join us for one grand round up of great photography!
