High Noon

DLWS is all about photography. We go to great lengths to get all of our participants out, behind the camera to start the creative and technical process. We will do our best to prepare you, teach you and inspire you to make the most of every moment behind the lens. And while we’ll give you all the tools to get it right, right from the start, there are simply some things you can’t do in one capture at camera.

The art of photography goes way beyond what our eyes see at the time of capture. A big part of Moose’s, Joe’s, Laurie’s and Kevin's photography relies on the heart. Combining the reality of the moment and the reality of the heart often requires skill, talent and heart in the digital darkroom so the viewer of the images sees what it is you saw when you took the photograph. That’s just part of what our High Noon Session is all about.
While you’re reading this, you are watching an image evolve. How can an image evolve? There are many events which simply cannot be captured in just one image. Time, tremendous depth-of-field with no depth-of-field, Black and White, 9 stop exposure range are just a few. That’s not to mention deficiencies in our capture devices we need to understand and deal with in post (post=post processing and production) so what our mind saw is what the viewer of our images see. This is just the starting points at High Noon!

Moose, Joe, Kevin and Laurie will teach this all to you tag team. We start with the basic of just uploading and organizing your files and where you find tools in Photoshop. This progresses on to Raw processing in Capture NX2. The digital darkroom lessons will vary constantly from the most basic to the most advance to all points in between. Are goal is to expose you to all the tools the digital darkroom provides you. This is not so you become a master “fixer” of images, but a master finisher. There is a big difference! Even more important, we want you to know these tools so when you’re at the camera, while technically the image might not be finished, you’ve finished it in your mind and heart and all that is left is following through.

We start on Monday with Moose’s basic DAM work and than Kevin’s Photoshop Basics. Kevin will take you through the tools and basics of Photoshop you need to be ready for Moose’s & Laurie’s lessons. We finish up Monday with a hands on, small flash lesson with Joe. Tuesday’s High Noon sessions is more advance Photoshop lessons and techniques. We do more than just teach step by step process, but the logic that goes into them. We want you to be able to mix and match what we teach so you develop your own workflow for your own images. On Wednesday, the High Noon session includes the most amazing flash lesson you’ve ever seen. Joe will take you from one, on camera flash to multiple flash portrait session. Each High Noon session has time at the end for the staff to come to YOUR computer to help YOU with YOUR images.

Every High Noon session is geared for participants to get all the help THEY ask for. Even though Moose or Joe or Laurie might be teaching up front, the environment is set up so participants can get assistance at their computer with their images. No matter the help you might need, the DLWS staff is there to make sure you receive it.

Continiued in 2009 are our Crit Sessions. Every, repeat, every participant will have scheduled 1 on 1 time with Moose, Joe, Kevin or Laurie at one of the crit stations (crit station = Dell notebook & Wacom 21UX Cintiq) where your images are loaded and reviewed by the instructor. Everything from camera technique, content review and Photoshop techniques will be covered. At the end of the session, your images will be prepped to be inserted into the Participant Slide Show. This insures that everyone will have their questions answered because if even if you’re too shy to ask in front of the class, you will have the opportunity to ask 1 on 1.
